A tornado lashed different villages in Maungdaw Townships of Arakan State, on March 31, at about 4 pm, according to a villager.
There has been no loss of life and injury, but seven houses were damaged, which had thatched roofs. The Kunsthee Pyin village of Nasaka area # 3 of Maungdaw Township was badly affected by the tornado.
Yesterday, at about 10 am, there was heavy rainfall in Kutupalong unregistered camp and the sheds were blown away by strong winds. The refugees became shelter less. Most of the sufferers are children and old people. Today, also there was heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar District, said a refugee.
The same day, a tornado lashed Lemosari of Bandarban district of Bangladesh near the Burma border, but there were no casualties, said a local Ahmed.
On March 30, at night, a tornado also lashed different villages in Rangamati district and Lama District of Bangladesh killing a woman. Around 50 others including a Buddhist monk were injured in Rangamati. Around 150 tin-sheds and thatched houses were damaged. But, in Lama District, some roofs of houses were blown away by the strong winds and 20 houses were destroyed.
Besides, on March 29, in Kakrachari District, there was heavy rainfall and the storm also uprooted many fruit trees and destroyed many vegetable farms, according to sources.
On March 29, the storm hit the “Bandaung Yan” refugee camp on the Burma-Thai border and destroyed about 45 houses, according to sources.
Besides, a weak magnitude earthquake struck Maungdaw in north Arakan, Burma, on March 30, at about 11:24 pm (Burmese local time). There has been no loss of life or property. At the same time, a strong 6.4 magnitude quake struck north of India’s Andaman Islands, off Burma at 10:24 pm (India local time), the US Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was also 406 km southwest of Bassain and 500 km southwest of Rangoon.
This year rain accompanied by storm and earthquake struck Burma, Bangladesh and the Thai-Burma border and it is not a good sign for the region, said an elderly man from Maungdaw town.
