Maungdaw, Burma: Two police officers and a corporal of Maungdaw police station demanded kyat 10 million from two villagers of Du Chee Yar Dan village on September 18, said a village elder on condition of anonymity.
On that day, a clash occurred between Maungdaw police and villagers of Kilaidaung (Du Chee Yar Dan) of Maungdaw south over mobile phones. When the police tried to arrest the villagers, they resisted and a clash occurred.
Relatives of two villagers fought with the three policemen. Later the police inspector of Maungdaw Police Station arrested ten villagers. Moreover, the police officer identified 107 other villagers on the allegation that they were also involved in the clash. So, the police officer demanded kyat 10 million to release all the villagers.
The Commander of Magee Chaung Nasaka camp of Nasaka Area No.7 of Maungdaw Township gave permission to people use mobile phones to the villagers of Du Chee Yar Dan for making contacts abroad by taking monthly fees.
However, the commander of Magee Chaung camp the following day went to the village and arrested Moulvi Ismail including two other villagers and sent them to Nasaka Headquarters.
The inspector Nyi Lwin Soe received kyat 6 million from villagers and villagers had to collect other 4 million kyat. Six persons namely Moulvi Ismail, Haji Ismail, Eliyas, Sulton, Moulvi Mustobiz and Forok were arrested while they were collecting money from villagers for the police officers, said a trader from the locality.
Now, the District police inspector Aung Htay and the inspector of Maungdaw police station Nyi Lwin Soe who demanded the money unlawfully from villagers are being investigated by the Department of Bureau of Special Investigation Arakan State. The OC Nyi Lwin Soe demanded money from villagers' unlawfully on false and fabricated cases and gave a share to the District Controller of Police Force Inspector Aung Htay. The OC also black-listed persons, who are rich and demand money from then even if they have not committed any crime.
In addition, the Maung Daw police station inspector Nyi Lwin Soe looted kyat 2. 7 million from a schoolteacher named Ali Zuhar (retired), hailed from Skikdar Para of Maungdaw Town on 1st week of October. He got the money from his son who lives in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj with permission from the Burmese government. Regarding this, the victim informed the higher authorities, but no action was taken, said a relative of the victim.
Besides, the police corporal Aye Tun became rich selling drugs with the support of District Police inspector Aung Htay and Maungdaw police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nyi Lwin Soe. According to an aide of police, Coporal Aye Tun took a share of the money from drug sales along with a person who hails from Nyaung Chaung village of Maungdaw Township.
A Yaba tablet smuggler Mey Naing from Guwa Township in Arakan State carries Yaba tablets to Buthidaung from Guwa and corporal Aye Tun carries the tablets from Buthidaung on his motorcycle to Maungdaw.
