Teknaf, Bangladesh: An official Rohingya refugee was severely beaten up by some local goons on August 22, when he was going to Leda makeshift camp from Nayapara camp to visit his relatives at about 4 pm, said a relative of the victim.
The victim was identified as Md. Hussain alias Kalu (35), son of Ismail, MRC No. 5744, Block H, Shed No. 2, and Room No. 2 of Nayapara refugee camp in Cox's Bazaar district.
While Kalu was going to Leda makeshift camp at about 4 pm, yesterday, he was caught and taken to the mountain area by the local goons due to a previous enmity. He was severely beaten up and was rolled from the top of the mountain. His neck was broken and became unconscious.
On being informed some refugees of Leda makeshift camp went to the spot immediately. The goons seeing the refugees approaching left the scene leaving the victim in a critical condition. The refugees brought the victim to the Nayapara clinic of a NGO called the Research Training and Management (RTM) immediately for treatment.
According to his relatives, the local goons had an old enmity with Kalu because his sister Noor Begum was raped by the goons two years ago. One of the local goons Nurul Huda (21), son of Abul Kasim, hailing from Leda village was sentenced to 30 years in prison. So, his colleagues including his two brothers attacked the victim to extract revenge.
A source in the clinic said that Md Hussain is being treated and is in a critical condition. Now, he is conscious but unable to speak.
The culprits have been identified as Md. Alam, Nurul Kabir, Farid, Zafar and two others belonging to Leda village under Teknaf union.
The relatives of the victim have informed the camp officer and other authorities.
