Maungdaw, Arakan State : An inspector of Maungdaw police station Nyi Nyi Lwin Soe tortured and killed a Rohingya businessman in custody on the night of July 21. He was picked up on suspicion of being involved in business with a man who fled with money from another businessman Noor Hussein, a Bangladeshi, said a relative of the victim on condition of anonymity.
The victim was identified as Asharaf Meah (50), son of Azizur Rahaman from Aley Than Kyaw village in Maungdaw Township .
He was arrested by the police on July 10, and was brought to Maungdaw police station and was tortured severely.
A shrimp businessman Noor Hussain from Shapuri Dip in Bangladesh had business links with another businessman (name unknown) from Maungdaw. The unknown businessman took Taka 3 million from Noor Hussain and went into hiding. He (Noor Hussain) had no way of getting back the money. But the victim Asharaf Meah had business links with the unknown business man earlier. So, the Bangladeshi businessman thought that if Asaraff was arrested he would get his money.
As a result, Noor Hussain approached the police inspector to have the money returned through Asahraf. The police Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maungdaw police station agreed expecting a large bribe.
Policemen went to Aley Than Kyaw village on July 10, on the orders of the OC of Maungdaw police station and made the arrest. Asaraff was taken to Maungdaw police station and subsequently tortured and killed.
The Nyi Nyi Lwin Soe, the OC of Maungdaw police station is infamous for his notorious activities. He is very cruel to the Rohingya community and makes arbitrary arrests and extorts money from Rohingyas.
According to the villagers of Aley Than Kyaw, the victim was simple, innocent and he had no connection with the money belonging to the Bangladeshi.
A schoolteacher said, "The victim was totally innocent. We want punishment for the murderer. The OC is well-known for his notorious crimes."
Asharaf Meah's relatives complained to the higher authorities to look into the matter and to give exemplary punishment to the culprit.
Asharaf's body was sent to the Maungdaw general hospital for autopsy. The authorities are trying to get a doctor's report that he died in hospital from some disease. The relatives have not yet received the body.
