Maungdaw, Arakan State : A Rohingya woman has been arrested and detained in Nasaka , Burma 's border security force camp in Maungdaw Township since July 20, for staying in her parent's house. She was asked for Kyat 150,000 for her release, said a relative of the victim on condition of anonymity.
The victim Shomjeda Begum (24), daughter of Nurul Islam, hails from Maung Nama village in Maungdaw Township , Arakan State .
Shomjeda Begum was married to Abdullah (28), son of Md. Hussain of Phar Wut Chaung Village in Maungdaw Township four years ago after getting permission from the concerned authorities. But five months ago her husband Abdullah left her.
Unable to look after herself she recently went to her parents' house to stay with them in Maung Nama village.
On July 20, Nasaka personnel from Aung Mangala Nasaka camp led by Camp-inCharge went to her parent's home and arrested Shomjeda Begum and took her to the Nasaka camp on the allegation that she has been living with her parents without any informing the concerned authorities. She has been detained in the camp.
The commander of Nasaka demanded Kyat 150,000 for her release.
"The victim has the right to go to her parents' house after being abandoned by her husband. Her crime is that she did not inform the concerned authorities in time. For this should she be arrested and detained in the camp? She is a woman why do they detain her in the camp?" a village elder asked.
