Teknaf, Bangladesh: Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) of the 42-Battalion in Teknaf seized smuggled goods worth Taka 16.8 million from the Burma-Bangladesh border in the last three months, according to BDR officials
The BDR seized smuggled goods worth Taka over 9.5 million in April, Taka 1.7 million in May and Taka 5.6 million in June from the Burma-Bangladesh border.
The seized goods included nets made of nylon, dried fish, eaglewood, saccharine, smuggled into Bangladesh and medicines, priton tablets smuggled to Burma , said an aide of the BDR.
Fuel, edible oil, biscuits, fertilizer and other items are smuggled to Burma from Bangladesh while clothes, longies, drugs, heroine, and slippers among other goods are smuggled into Bangladesh .
Teknaf border trade is a place for legal import of rice, fish, shrimp, wood and onion to Bangladesh .
Though BDR and other concerned authorities have been trying to check smuggling to and from Bangladesh, they are unable to do it as there are many porous points in the border, said a trader in Teknaf.
