Maungdaw, Arakan State : Five Rohingyas hailing from Maungdaw Township were sentenced to three months in prison by the Maungdaw court on April 2. They were arrested for smuggling scrap to Bangladesh , said a relative of one.

The prisoners have been identified as Mahbu Rahaman (30), son of Hafizur Rahaman, Hamid Hussain (28), son of Abu Rahman , Md. Alam (35), son of Abdu Gaffar, Shabbir Ahmed (30), son of Ahmed, Md. Idris (35), son of Bhadur Meah. All belong to Maungdaw Township .
 
On February 21, the five received permission to send shrimps to Nilla under Cox’s Bazar district, Bangladesh after paying Major Then Lun, the commander of Burma’s border security force, or Nasaka area No. 5 of Ngar Khu Ya village tract in Maungdaw Township.
 
The five in a row boat loaded shrimp along with some scrap and berthed at the Nasaka gate on the river mouth to inform the Nasaka that they were ready to cross the Naff River , which demarcates Burma and Bangladesh . But Nasaka personnel spied some extra scrap which had not been permitted to be carried to Bangladesh . As a result, they were arrested and their goods and boat were seized and brought to the Nasaka camp. They were detained in Nasaka camp till March 9.
 
On March 10, the arrested persons were sent to Maungdaw police station. Commander Major Then Lun wanted to release them after taking kyat 50,000 from each, but, later, the commander changed his mind, according to sources.
 
However, they have to pay kyat 1,500,000 to the magistrate, kyat 800,000 to government lawyer and kyat 500,000 to a government staff who carries files, to reduce their jail terms, a source close to them said.
 
On April 2, all the arrestees were produced at the Maungdaw court for illegally crossing the border and sentenced to three months in jail. Now, they are in Buthidaung jail.
