Maungdaw, Arakan State: On July 3rd, a soldier from the Burmese army’s Marrawaddy out-post severely tortured an elderly Rohingya man on a new expressway that runs from the Maungdaw-Buthidaung highway to Ahngumaw Village in Rathedaung Township, according to Mr. Nurul Amin from Aley Than Kyaw Village. The alleged victim was identified as Nazir Ahamed (50) from Udaung Village in Maungdaw Township.
Prior to the incident, a Maungdaw Township officer issued an order prohibiting Rohingya from crossing or using the road and providing that individuals who disobey the order will be punished. However, Rakhines are allowed to use the new road as they wish, Mr. Nurul said.
According to Mr. Nazir, a soldier from the Marrawaddy military out-post encountered him on the road and asked why he was there, to which Nazir responded by saying that he went to the road to herd his cattle.
Upon hearing Nazir’s response, the soldier started beating the elderly man until he became unconscious, according to one of the victim’s relatives.
Sources from Udaung Village said Nazir is currently receiving private treatment from village doctors, and they also noted that army personnel and Rakhine extremists from Marrawaddy Village (Saung Paingnyar) frequently harass, torture, and rob Rohingya villagers with impunity, as the authorities don't take any action against them.
