Police are increasing their harassment against the Rohingya community in Maungdaw Township, according to school teacher that preferred not to be named.
“On September 21, a group of police from Bawli Bazar of Maungdaw north arrested Alizuhar, 40; son of Abul Hussain, hailed from Lonedon village under area.5 over the allegation that he had been involved in violence of June 8, 2012.”
Hussain was sent to the Maungdaw police station on Sept. 22. In early 2012, he was also arrested for the same charges, but released after paying 500,000 Kyat. The judge had demanded 10M Kyat for his release, but the court clerk settled for less.
One of his close relatives wondered how a man could be arrested twice for the same charges.
Another man was also arrested for the same charges in early August. Hyrul Amin, 35; son of Sayedullah, from Hati Para, was picked up by Bawli Bazar police. He has been missing since being sent to the Maungdaw jail for questioning.
Police announced they know of 52 persons that were involved in the clashes between Rakhine and Rohingya in 2012. Since the announcement many of the suspects fled to Bangladesh fearing arrest and torture. About 20 people are still living in Arakan state in a “panic-stricken state”, according to one of their friends.
It’s been over a year since the sectarian violence broke out in June of 2012 but security forces are still harassing the Rohingya community, said one youth that didn’t want their name used. Police are looking for suspects in northern Maungdaw, even though the violence happened in the south, the youth added.
