Three foreign visitors were recently arrested by police while visiting the Kutubalong unregistered Rohingya refugee camp, a resident that didn’t want their name used told the Kaladanpress. The resident said the visitors didn’t get permission from local authorities before visiting the camp.
After being tipped off a police team was quickly dispatched to camp. The visitors were arrested in the afternoon while conducting interviews with several refugees, according to sources.
At the time of press the foreigners are being detained at the Ukhiya police station awaiting further investigation, according to commanding police officer Gias Uddin.
The Kaladanpress has learned that one of the arrestees is from Singapore and the others are New Zealand nationals.
The Bangladesh government has tightened security along the Bangladesh-Burma border affecting mainly the Rohingya refugee camps.
The authorities want to restrict visits to the refugee camps by foreigners that want to help, said one border-based aid worker that didn’t want their name used for security concerns.
