Australian Rohingya gather for Eid holiday

The Burmese Rohingya Association in Queensland-Australia (BRAQA) hosted a community event for the Muslim Eid holiday at the Australian International Islamic College in Durack, Australia. About 420 people attended the meetup on the second week of August that was organized as a cultural exchange between the Rohingya and other Australians.

Many people gathered for the community event.The attendees included Senator Claire Moore, Mr. Yousub, president of the Islamic Council of Queensland (ICQ), Mr. Yusob Khatree, President of Muslim Charitable Foundation (MCF) and many others.

BRAQA President Hossain Juhar acknowledged the Australian government support for the Rohingya community.

 “I would like to thank the Australian government through you (senator) specially it’s Foreign Minister Hon Bob Carr for lobbing by taking humanitarian side to bring democracy in Burma and many other countries around the world. And for raising the Rohingya issue with the Burmese Government. We hope and request to the Australian government to do more to restore the democratic rights of the most persecuted ethnic minority Rohingya in Burma who have been victims of persecution from Arakan (Rakhine) and Burmese government itself for decades” said Hossain Juhar.

Senator Moore thanked the BRAQA for all the work it has done for the community.

“We heard and we know that the troubles are happening in your home land, our prayers are with you all. Welcome you with the values in our country…We will do whatever we can to help Rohingya in Burma and in Australia and urged the Australian government to do more to stabiles the situation in Burma.”

Traditional Rohingya food is served at the event.
