Police arrest Kutupalong makeshift camp refugee for trafficking

Ukhiya police arrested a former refugee camp secretary for human trafficking, according to a leader from the unofficial Kutupalong makeshift camp in Bangladesh that spoke to Kaladan Press Network on condition of anonymity.

Police arrested Rakib Ullah, 33, son of late Nazumul Haque for the trafficking of people traveling to Malyasia by boat. Other included rape, extortion of camp residents, harassment and smuggling, the leader said

Police arrested Ullah and 2 other residents, Mohamed Noor and Syed (Lalu) at the camp and brought them to the station. All of the men stand accused of extorting money from residents and raping a woman while Ullah served as the camp committee secretary. The rape charges were brought against the men earlier but only now have the authorities decided to proceed with the possibility of prosecution, according to elder from the camp that didn’t want his name used.

The accuser is still waiting for justice, the elder said.
