Salt water that has entered river systems following high tides is affecting paddy fields in southern Maungdaw. The salt plagued rivers are destroying farms in the area, said one farmer who spoke with Kaladanpress on condition of anonymity.

“Some villagers to inspect the areas affected after learning about it.”

The salt water has already affected farms in Aley Than Kyaw, Khonza Bill, Shilkhali and Buhamu Para, according to villagers.

Hussain (not his real name), told the Kaladan Press that he was very surprised, “In my whole life I have never seen salt water destroy paddy fields in southern Maungdaw,” said the Rohingya farmer.

An Aley Than Kyaw village administration confirmed that salt water destroyed many paddy fields. He also said that there is no rain at the moment causing farmers many problems.

International aid groups that face restrictions by authorities in delivering food and supplies to Rohingya Muslims haven’t been allowed to reach northern Arakan state, the village admin officer said.
