A Rohingya fisherman has been missing since he capsized his boat in the Bay of Bengal on May 27, according to a relative of the fishermen who didn’t want their name used.
The missing man has been identified as Shah Alam, from Leda unregistered refugee camp in Bangladesh.
According to the other 4 fishermen that were with Shah Alam the engine boat there were traveling in was capsized in the evening after being struck by a huge wave in the Bay of Bengal. They swam to shore but Shah Alam could not be found.
Noor Mohamed, the owner of the sunken boat, said the incident happened on their way back home.
Ayub, a refugee committee member from Leda camp, said that Alam’s family depends on him for the earnings he generates as a fisherman. The family that doesn’t receive UN support will suffer hardships if he is not found.
The meteorological department has advised all maritime ports to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 after a deep convection has formed over the northern part of the Bay of Bengal. This is believed to be causing the rocky squally weather in adjoining coastal area. Maritime ports in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, and Mongla have also been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 due to the changing weather conditions.
