A Nasaka commanding officer from area number 7 is using new tactics in order to extort money from Rohingya villagers in southern Maungdaw, according to a trader that spoke with Kaladanpress on condition of anonymity.
“The Nasaka Commanding officer has ordered villagers and village administration officers to build toilets and poultry farms inside their camp.”
Some of the village administration officers are profiting off this by taking more money than what is needed to build the requested faculties in the camp. Each family has to pay between 1000-1500 Kyats depending on their incomes, the extra money collected is being reportedly pocketed by the corrupt administration officers.
Syed Alam, who is the administration officer for Khonza Bill, has been harassing everyone for money from everyone, even those who are very poor, according to reports from villagers.
“After the (sectarian) conflict the Rohingya community can’t earn money from fishing, farming and other businesses, But the authorities are still trying to extort money whenever they wish.”
Following fighting in June and October of the last year, many Rohingyas have been restricted to displaced camps or locked in their villages.
“We are not able to fulfill their demands, (but still) they are harassing and arresting us to extort money, said a daily laborer from southern Maungdaw who didn’t want their name used.
