A Rohingya youth who was escorting his 2 elder sisters to their father-in- laws’ homes following a wedding ceremony was detained and tortured by Nasaka (Burma’s border security force), according to the youth’s relative who spoke to the Kaladanpress on condition of anonymity.
On Jan.26, at around 6 pm, Abdullah, 22, was bringing his sisters from Nari Bill to Kular Bill by boat. They were crossing a small river that separates the villages that are only about 500 yards from each other. After the group crossed the river, Nasaka officers from Area-6 detained Abdullah failing to inform them that he would be leaving his village.
Since sectarian violence between Muslims and Buddhists broke out in June and October in Arakan state, freedom of movement for Muslim Rohingyas has been restricted. Many are forced at gunpoint to stay in their villages.
Abdullah, was released after paying a 40,000 Kyat ($46.76 US) bribe, according to another close relative who didn’t want their name used.
