Mohamed Faroque, 18, a Bangladeshi fisherman from Gudam Para, has been killed by Nasaka personnel (Burma’s border security force) who opened fire on his fishing group on the Naff River, according to one Teknaf resident who didn’t want their name used.

The resident said the fishing group had crossed into Burma by row boat on Jan. 9, when the attack from officers from Nasaka Kanpyin camp took place. But according to one of the fishermen, they had already obtained permission from the camp to be there. The fishermen reported the incident to Mohamed Faroque’s family and Bangladeshi officials.

During a meeting with Teknaf Battalion- 2 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Nasaka officials denied being involved in the attack. When the BGB went to retrieve Mohamed Faroque body it was missing.

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Other Bangladeshi fishermen have been killed by Nasaka in the Naff River earlier in the year. There are also fishermen and woodcutters from Bangladesh languishing in jails in Burma.
