The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has appointed the former Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla as the special envoy to Burma to oversee matters involving sectarian violence that broke out between Rohingya and Rakhine in Arakan state, according to an OIC official statement.
The decision to appoint Mr. Kalla, who was recently the chairman of the Indonesian Red Cross, was made at the Extraordinary Islamic Summit last August in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu had planned to visit Burma to provide support for Rohingya Muslims who faced attacks, but it was postponed.
The OIC Secretary-General said the visit that came in response to an invitation from Myanmar’s President Thein Sein will happen eventually. “We have not canceled our pre-planned visit to Myanmar but it was postponed due to insecure conditions in the country.”
