Maungdaw, Arakan State: Nasaka border security force opened fire on several Rohingya fishermen on the Naf River, on Oct.20, according to a fisherman who spoke with the Kaladanpress on condition of anonymity.
“No one injured when they shot at the fishing boats. But the Nasaka personnel from Shilkhali arrested everyone and took them to their camp. Then they tortured the fishermen to extort money.””
The fishing boats, which were confiscated, were transported to the Shilkhali Nasaka outpost where the river is wider.
The security forces Nasaka took 15,000 Kyat (US $17.61) from each boat but released everyone after the bribes were paid. There has been an increase of extortion perpetuated by Nasaka against Rohingya following the sectarian violence that erupted in Arakan State, in June. The Nasaka may be taking advantage of the Rohingya who have been largely cutout from support from international rights groups by the Myanmar government.
Some of the fishermen who were arrested are: Younus, (30), Nurul Haque, (35), son of Tazu Muluk, Sayed Kasim, (30), son of Lal Meah, Khonza Bill, Rahamat Ullah, (25), son of Aman Ullah. All of the men are from Udaung village tract, in Maungdaw south.
