Heavy rain and strong winds hit northern Arakan State in Burma last night, said a local villager.
“Many villagers of Maungdaw south have been suffering from rainstorms because their houses were burned down by Rakhine mobs during communal violence earlier [this year]."
“They are not able to rebuild houses in their locality because of financial problems and they are also not allowed to rebuild by the present quasi-civilian government.”
An elder from Aley Than Kyaw said that many children and elderly men are suffering from a scarcity of clothes and blankets, and believes they will be affected by various diseases.
The elder also said that despite houses being destroyed by the rain and wind, villagers have not received assistance from the government.
In addition, downpours destroyed some huts of the Kutupalong makeshift camp where Rohignya refugees live on the Bangladesh border without support from UNHCR or government of Bangladesh, according to refugees.
In Bangladesh, some local houses were washed away by severe weather and many fishing boats went missing in the Bay of Bengal, an official said.
