Ukhiya, Bangladesh: The newly appointed makeshift camp committee beat a Rohingya refugee and his wife for no reason on March 14, according to Mohamed Ullah , an elder from the Kutupalong makeshift camp.

“The committee members – Abu Siddique (Chairman), Rafique (Member) and Ayub (Member)- beat Mohamed Amin and his wife, seriously wounding them,” he said.

The committee members were collecting the refugee lists in the camp as ordered by the camp-in-charge (CIC) of the UNHCR at the registered refugee camp of Kutupalong. However, the committee members were also collecting money from the refugees. The committee members didn’t include refugees on the lists who refused to pay the money to them, according to a refugee leader from the camp.

“Mohamed Amin, a former committee member questioned the group about their behavior regarding the refugees and requested they enlist all who are living in the camp for a long time. There was an argument between Amin and the committee members,” according to the source.

The committee chairmen, Abu Siddque, ordered his committee members to beat Amin. There was a quarrel where the committee members brutally beat him. His wife tried to save her husband from the quarrel, but the committee members also severely beat her. The two victims were seriously wounded, according to Asma Begum, a female refugee from the camp.

“The camp committee members and chairman escaped as refugees nearby the event rushed to the spot,” she said.

The camp committee informed the CIC that the refugees were trying to beat them while they collected the camp list. The CIC sent the camp security officer to the spot and found that the committee made the problem, a religious leader from the camp said.

“The committee are harassing refugees everywhere to extort money from them with the help of the CIC as the committee paid a huge amount of money to get the position of camp committee,” according to the source.
