Teknaf, Bangladesh: A Rohingya fisherman was killed by a local Bangladeshi fisherman on the morning of December 17, said a fisherman who worked together with the victim.
“A local fisherman hit the head of a Rohingya fisherman with an oar while a boat was being pushed to sea from offshore by fishermen in the morning.”
The deceased was identified as Noor Mohamed (36), son of Nurul Islam of Nayapara Camp, said a refugee from the camp.
However, Noor lived with his family members in Bandol Bonia of Shamlapur Union under Teknaf Police Station for their survival, as Noor worked in the area as a fisherman.
“He was registered with a data sheet under UNHCR, but he didn’t get rations from the World Food Programme (WFP) as usual with other registered refugees.”
“He had five family members, and he lived outside of the camp in order to work for his family’s survival.”
“While the fishermen were pushing a fishing boat to the sea, a local fisherman scolded and used bad manners to him, so that he couldn’t push the boat,” according to sources.
“During his argument with the local fisherman, another local fisherman suddenly took an oar and hit his head. He fell down on the ground unconscious.”
“Other fishermen sent the victim to Cox’s Bazar Government Hospital for treatment, but doctors referred him to Chittagong Medical College for better treatment.”
However, Noor died on his way to Chittagong. He was sent to Kutuali Police Station in Chittagong for an autopsy. His body was sent back again after the autopsy to his family in Bandol Bonia.
Later, he was buried in a local cemetery. Upon hearing the event in the Nayapara Camp, his relatives complained to the UNHCR regarding the matter, said a relative of the victim.
