Teknaf, Bangladesh: The Nasaka, Burma’s border security force, abducted two Bangladeshi fishermen on December 10, at about 1:00 am. The men were fishing in the Naff River, which separates two countries, said a close relative of the victims.
“The abducted fishermen were Ali Hussain (26), and Boshir Ahmed (21) from Mogh Para village.
The two had been fishing as usual when parts of the netting detached and floated to the Burma side while the fishermen were sleeping.
At that moment, a group of Nasaka personnel from Kayan Khali village Nasaka camp under Maungdaw Township arrived by boat and seized the men, said the fisherman Boshir Ahmed.
In the morning, the Nasaka contacted a relative of the arrested men in Bangladesh by phone and demand a bribe of 50,000 kyats for the their release from custody. They told the relative the deadline for payment was 24 hours of the men faced jail time.
According to a fisherman from Shapuri Dip, fishermen working on the Naff River have to pay 300,000 kyats or 17,000 taka to the Nasaka per year per boat as protection money.
However, yesterday the fishermen were released after paying the money.
