Maungdaw, Arakan State: A Nasaka agent has been collecting money since the beginning of this month from students who have to use the road of his embankment to get to their school, which is located between Nari Bill and Maung Nama villages, said one of the fathers who asked not to be named.
“The Nasaka agent Idris (42), son of Esuf, took a fishing project from the Nasaka earlier this year, but its embankment was destroyed by the recent flood. So, he has to rebuild it.”
“The students of Maung Nama village have been using the embankment wall as a road to go to school because the original road is far away from their village. So the students want to use the short cut path to get to school using the embankment of the fishing project of Idris.”
“As a result, with the help of other local Nasaka personnel, the Nasaka agent Idris has been collecting Kyat 1,000 per student who wants to cross his embankment, and the poor students are facing difficulties.”
The local villagers have asked Idris to stop collecting money from students, but he has refused. This matter was appraised to the local Nasaka officer, but no action has been taken yet, said a local schoolteacher.

In addition, one Sarapa (military intelligence) officer of Nasaka Area No. 6 collects three gallons of fuel from one shop per month. One gallon of fuel is being sold at Kyat 4,300 at the open market. There are four shopkeepers who sell fuel in Darga Bazar. Hence, one shopkeeper has to pay Kyat 12,900 per month to the officer as tax. As a result, the officer will earn Kyat 61,600 from Darga Bazar shopkeepers every month, said a shopkeeper from the said market.
