Maungdaw, Arakan State: Maungdaw Township and its people faced difficulty in traveling and finding food after heavy rain and wind submerged much of Maungdaw on Friday, according to an elder from Maungdaw.
“The heavy rain and wind slashed roads, homes, shrimp farms, and paddy fields with water.”
“Most of Maungdaw North—Hla Poe Khung (Sorfordin Bil), Kyauk Hlaikhar (Darga Dil),Kyauk Pinseak (Nari Bil), Ywet Nhyo Taung, Yaitwin Kyun (Yaymyet Bil), Ywet Nhyo Taung, Oo Shai Kya (Burashida Para)—and Maungdaw South—Maung Ni Para, Padinn (Fataungzar), Thapaydaw (Basara) and Then Da—are covered with water. Other parts of Maungdw, which are situated near the Naf River, are also flooded.”
“We are now facing food shortages as we are mostly daily laborers and fishermen,” said Mohamed Hashime from Mangalagyi Village.
“Most of our roads were destroyed by tide water, and the rice seedlings were just starting on our plantations. The shrimp farms owned by Rohingya were also damaged by the inundating water.
“Some roofs were destroyed by heavy winds, and some trees fell down in rural areas.”
Most of the Rohingya villagers from rural areas are facing shortages of food and are not able to go to work as all the rural areas are covered with water, said a teacher from Nari Bil Village.
In addition, the Burma-Bangladesh border was also affected by heavy rains, with most of the highways covered by water and some bridges destroyed by rain, said Kalameah from Teknaf who has cargo carrying trucks on this road.
“The unregistered refugee camp was also affected by heavy rain which destroyed the shacks, but there were no injuries among the refugees,” said a refugee leader from Kutupalong Refugee Camp.
