Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh: Bangladeshi authorities have complained about the Nasaka’s (Burma border security force) move to erect barbed wire fences within 150 yards of the zero-line at the Arakan border point. The Bangladeshis believe the Nasaka may be violating international law, an official said.
The complaint came at a sector commander level flag meeting between the Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) and Burma’s border security force, or Nasaka, at Cox’s Bazaar on May 24.
The flag meeting was held at the Hotel Sea Place of Cox’s Bazaar district. They attendees discussed various issues at the meeting, and raised the problem of the 55 Burmese prisoners who are still languishing in the Cox’s Bazaar Jail after having finished their jail terms, according to sources.
The participants also discussed in detail the issues of infiltration of Rohingya into Bangladesh, the abduction of Bangladeshi fishermen from the Naf River, methods for stopping smuggling at the border, and possible exchanges of prisoners.
At the end of the five-hour-long meeting that began at 11 a.m., BGB sector commander Lt. Col. Abdur Rouf, who led the 16-member Bangladesh team, told the journalists the discussion was fruitful.
U Aung Gyi, the director of the Nasaka, Maungdaw, led the 17-member Burma team.
