Teknaf, Bangladesh: Every day, fuel and edible oil are being smuggled to Burma from Bangladesh, said a local trader from Teknaf on condition of anonymity.

From various points along the Bangladesh-Burma border, such as Maulvi Bazar, Whykong, Mina Bazaar, Nilla, and Teknaf, fuel and edible oil are being smuggled to Burma every day.

On May 5, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), formerly known as Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) of Nila, seized 263 liters of diesel while the fuel was being smuggled to Burma from Maulvi Bazaar point. Mostly smugglers have been carrying barrels of fuel and edible oil through Moulvi Bazaar River to Naff River and then sent to Burma, said another trader from Nila.

“Smugglers managed goods from Nila Bazaar, Whykong Bazaar, and Ukiya Bazaar of Cox’s Bazaar District.”

“Besides, medicines, fertilizer, sugar, onions, potatoes, wheat, electronic goods, and aluminum goods are being smuggled to Burma.”

“However, from Burma, scraps, liquor, polythene, current nets, and narcotic drugs such as Yaba [methamphetamine] tablets are being smuggled to Bangladesh from Burma.”

Through legal channels, cattle, bamboo, and timber is being exported to Bangladesh from Burma. One hundred pieces of bamboo are being sold at the rate of Taka 3,500 in Shapuri Dip of Bangladesh.
