Tekanf, Bangladesh: Bangladeshi authorities seized food items on April 13 while its being smuggled to Burma from Bangladesh across the Naff River, said a local trader from Teknaf.
After being tipped off, the concerned authorities seized the various items of Bangladeshi food following a raid.
The seized items included cooking oil, sugar, dried fish, and garlic. Nobody was arrested.
Recently, some businessmen attempted to smuggle food items to Burma from Bangladesh for their profit without the knowledge of Bangladeshi authorities.
According to sources, there are strong syndicates involved in smuggling on both sides of the Burma and Bangladesh border.
Mostly food items are being smuggled to Burma through the illegal point of Molovi Para under Teknaf Police Station, sources added.
The Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB), police, and the Bangladeshi Coast Guard are alert along the border regarding the smuggling.
“If food items are smuggled to Burma, there are scarcities for the Bangladeshi people, so Bangladeshi authorities must try to stop the illegal trade,” said a close aide of the government.
