In what appears to be the first death from Swine Flu in Burma, a Chinese boy from Hong Kong died of H1N1 virus four days ago in Lashio in Northeast Shan State in Burma, said local sources.

According to government hospital sources in Lashio, the H1N1 virus has been transmitted to a local Kachin nurse, of age around 30, in the hospital soon after she sprayed an unknown anti-virus gas on the body of the Chinese boy.

Eyewitness said the nurse’s body has swollen and she is now admitted in Lashio Hospital.

On June 28 at about 10 p.m. Burma Standard Time, emergency blood donors were requested to give blood by the Lashio Christian Centre, said people at the centre.

Meanwhile, four family members of a pastor in the Chin Baptist Church in town have also been infected by the H1N1 virus after eating pork. They are now hospitalized in Lashio, said sources close to the pastor's family.

The junta-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper reported on Saturday that a 13-year-old girl has become the first confirmed carrier of the H1N1 swine flu virus in Burma.

The newspaper said, the girl, who has not been identified, is being kept in intensive care unit in Rangoon hospital.

On June 11, the United Nations' World Health Organization (WHO) raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from phase 5 to phase 6.

WHO said, the virus is contagious, spreads easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.
