Apprehensive of unrest on the first anniversary of the September 2007 saffron revolution led by monks, security has been beefed up by the Burmese military junta in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Burma. Policemen have been deployed to guard every monastery in town, a source said.

Burmese soldiers and policemen were mainly guarding the monasteries and monitoring the precincts and interiors, a resident said.

Policemen were also conducting checks on residents near the monasteries at night and have ordered people not to travel along the road for security reasons, a resident added.

The Burmese military junta has also imposed night curfew starting from 10 p.m. in the town since September 18 (Thursday) in the aftermath of the students pasting anti-regime posters to denounce the 20th anniversary of the coup in the country.

Meanwhile, the Commander of No (1) Bureau of Special Operations or Commander of Special Operations for Northern Burma and former Northern Command (Ma-Pa-Kha) Commander Lt-Gen Ohn Myint are still in Kachin State. Lt-Gen Ohn Myint will be staying till the end of this month, said a resident who is close to the police.

Locals believe that the reason Ohn Myint is over staying in the state till the end of this month was because he was the one who controlled last September's movement in Kachin state.
