Residents of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State are desperate to have uninterrupted supply of electricity from the Mali stream hydro-power project in Gang Dau Yang set up by a Kachin ceasefire group, Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).
Distribution of electricity among residents is inequitable. While some quarters in town receive electricity 24 hours a day from the Mali stream ( Not Irrawaddy River ), the quarter located in the rural areas do not get regular power supply, a resident in the rural quarter complained.
According to Tatkone's (Dapkawng) residents, they have set up a committee which includes Christian religious leaders to procure electricity and have started collecting the necessary finance for uninterrupted electricity supply. Their efforts should bear fruit within a year.
The KIO and the Burmese military junta authorities were said to have been trying to transmit electricity to the rural areas. But it could not put in place the necessary infrastructure to do so, a resident added.
The committee members said that if they generate five million Kyat (est. US $4,444) for the electricity to be transmitted, it would first make arrangements to light up the main road in Tatkone quarter. Then they would try to get the electricity through to the households in the quarter.
