The Burmese military junta is setting up election commissions for the ensuing referendum which will be held in May in a quarter in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, northern Burma, a source said.

The letters for setting up of the election commissions was released on March 14 by the Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC).  The letter says that there will be 11 members in the election commission in a quarter along with four members for the polling booth, a supervisor and two guards for the booth, said an official on condition of anonymity.

"In a quarter the election commission will have the quarter chairman as the president and the other members of the quarter council would also be members of the Quarter Election Commission (QEC)," said a member of the polling booth supervisors in a quarter.

She added that the TPDC has given the responsibility to four school teachers to be polling booth supervisors and two officials of the fire brigade will act as polling booth guards.

However, though the government is setting up election commissions in the quarters, it has not yet announced a specific date for the polls, even though the referendum is set to be held in May, she added.
