Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Kachin Theological College (KTC) under Burma's largest Baptist Convention, Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) got underway today in Nawng Nang School compound in Myitkyina Township in Kachin State of Northern Burma, said KBC sources.

During the week-long ceremony (March 24 to 30) on the 75th anniversary of KTC, the Honorary Doctorate Degree (Doctor of Divinity, D.D.) will be awarded for the first time to selected alumni on Saturday.

Moreover, a special Kachin cultural Manau dance festival called 'Ramma Hpaji Manau Nau Gup— meaning Youth Wisdom Manau', inaugural ceremony of a three-storey Diamond Jubilee Hall and the 58th joint graduation service with KTC and its branch Kutkai Bible in Northeast Shan State are among the programmes during the diamond jubilee.

In order to hold the diamond jubilee, the KTC had to apply for permission from the Township Administrative Office (Ma-Ya-Ka) of Burma's ruling junta in Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, Rev. Sam Sun, chairman of KTC Trustees told KNG today.

The KTC is preparing several tents for receiving over 5,000 domestic guests and invited special guests from outside the country including Bethlehem Baptist Church, the root missionary of KBC, Rev. Sam Sun added.

Earlier the Kachin Bible School now KTC, was established by three prominent ethnic Kachin leaders ---Maran Robin in Myitkyina, Lahpai Zau Tu in Bhamo and Labya De in Shan State. It was demanded at the convention meeting of the Board of American Baptist Mission headquarters in Rangoon to grant a separate Bible School for Kachin Church in October, 1930.

Two years after the demand, the Kachin Bible School was founded in Nawng Nang Village, 10 miles north of Myitkyina Township on June 6, 1932 with the dedicated work of the three Kachin leaders.

The actual diamond jubilee had fallen last year but the ceremony is being held this year.  The reason was that the KTC wanted to celebrate together with this year's graduation ceremony.

There are over 400,000 Kachin Baptist followers in Burma, according to the KBC sources.

The KTC is now one of the biggest Theological Colleges in Northern Burma and about 100 students graduate every year, said the KTC Trustees chairman, Rev. Hkalam Sam Sun.
