Two Kachin civilians were killed and three injured after government shelling struck the Kachin town of Mayan (Mayang) village in Mogaung Township, according to residents.
A shell hit the home of Jangmaw Awng Nu, killing his 27-year-old wife, Labram Nang Bu, and their eight-year-old son. His father, Jangmaw Awng Nu, 90, and a two-year baby were also injured by the shelling, according to a neighbor.
Burma Army’s Artillery Battalion No. 372, stationed close to the village, allegedly fired 7 or 8 mortar shells into the village on Jan. 29, but only Jangmaw Awng Nu’s home was hit.
A woman told the Kachin News Group that the local artillery battalion often attacks their village.
Mayan village, located close to the Myitkyina to Mandalay railway, is usually kept under tight control by the Burma military but there have been clashes with the Kachin Independence Army’s (KIA) Battalion 11 who also consider it also part of their territory.
Three civilians were killed and several injured after government troops attacked Laiza early in the year.
