More than 12 people were killed and several hundred were injured after an earthquake shook Yingjiang County, in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, in China’s southwest Yunnan province, according to eyewitnesses...

More than 12 people were killed and several hundred were injured after an earthquake shook Yingjiang County, in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, in China’s southwest Yunnan province, according to eyewitnesses.

According to a Chinese official, the 5.8-maganitude quake jolted the area at 12:58 p.m. Beijing Time. Many houses collapsed.
yingjiangThe Yin Mau Hotel, owned by a group of Kachin businessmen from Burma’s Northern Kachin State, was among the minor damaged buildings. However, the number of casualties has been not verified according to hotel personnel.

Witnesses told the Thailand-based Kachin News Group, the death toll and number of injured will likely increase because many people have been buried under debris and parts of buildings and hotels.

Roadside electrical poles collapsed and the electricity has been cut off in the county since the quake.

Military personnel are conducting rescue activities at the affected sites, said eyewitnesses.

The China Earthquake Network Center said the epicenter is at Shiming village, about 2 kilometers away from the county seat.

A wave of tremors also struck momentarily in Mangshi, Ruili, in the prefecture and Laiza and Myitkyina in Kachin State, northern Burma, according to residents in those places.
