Goods worth over 80 million Kyats from Thailand imported from the Myawaddy border town were seized by the Burmese military junta authorities in Pegu division three days ago, said an owner of the goods.
At least five vehicles were transporting the Thai goods like medicines, televisions sets, spare parts for vehicles, cosmetics and food items. It was seized in Waw township checkpoint about 25 kilometres in eastern Pegu (Bago) city, a vehicle owner said.
"The authorities charged the owners of importing the goods illegally. First they found the coffeemix and then seized every thing," a vehicle owner said on condition of anonymity.
At least 10,000 coffeemix packages were seized and the owners of the goods and the vehicle drivers detained.
"The police have filed a case in court. We don't know what will happen next," she added.
The owners said tax had already been paid to custom officers on some of the goods. They said they have been importing goods for many years by bribing local authorities.
The Burmese authorities recently setup checkpoints on the main road to Rangoon and are checking every vehicle entering the former capital.
The regime set up more check points after it received information that dissidents would trigger explosions in the largest city on the first anniversary of the monk led demonstrations last year.
