Local Burmese military junta authorities are speeding up the preparation of the list of family members in the townships for the ensuing constitutional referendum in May.

"We have to submit the list to the senior officers today. That's why we are trying to finish the work," said one of quarter leader in Ye Township, Mon State . Local authorities in Ye finished collecting the list at 8 pm yesterday.

The residents in Ye also said recording the list of over 18 to 70 is unusual. It has not happened before.

The local authorities told them it was for the elections, but the residents alleged that they (authorities) didn't tell the exact time of the elections.

"The quarter leader has already listed our family members including the civilian staff," a former civilian staff in Mudon Township said and added "but some departmental officers are not sure whether they are going to get a chance to vote or not".

Local authorities recorded the residents' age, identity number and their occupations, said Ye residents.

IMNA sources said authorities in Ye also listed residents who didn't have identity numbers to redo it. Residents think authorities will do it for free. After they finish recording the list of residents without identity cards in town, they will go to the rural areas.

The authorities in Moulmein made identity cards for the staff in the NMSP office in Moulmein (Mawlamyaine, the capital of Mon).

Moreover, the authorities in Karen State also issued "temporary registration cards" for the nation wide referendum.
