Khitar Non – The New Mon State Party (NMSP) met with members from the Myanmar Peace Center (MPC) for an informal and unplanned discussion in the Mon state capital of Moulmein last Sunday.
U Hla Maung Shwe, MPC’s Senior Advisor, said the government wanted to be able to share their vision of “the political roadmap that will continue to work”.
Discussions that took place at the meeting will be presented to the government, U Hla Maung Shwe said. “We are just negotiating for both sides.”
Other MPC delegates included Dr. Kyaw Yin Hlaing, U Aung Naing Oo and U Nyo Ohn Myit.
Nai Tala Nye, NMSP’s central executive committee, told IMNA that the MPC came to NMSP’s liaison office for the unplanned visit. The ethnic armed group has no plans to individually meet with the government. The NMSP already told the government’s Union Peace Working Committee (UPWC) that they want all political negotiations to involve all the ceasefire groups following in line with United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) protocol.
The NMSP will “follow the policy of UNFC” said Nai Hongsa Bonkhaine, in charge of foreign affairs of NMSP.
The NMSP is one of eleven UNFC members. The NMSP General Secretary Nai Hong Sar also serves as the general secretary for the UNFC.
The UNFC just concluded the 3 day long Ethnic Nationalities Conference in the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. During the meeting the UNFC decided to advocate for the formation of Bama state to be included in a new federal union constitution. They also requested for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to be included in upcoming peace discussions.
