People from Mon State were thrilled to learn that a new airline will be offering direct flights from Mae Sot, Thailand, to Moulmein, the capital of Mon State in Burma.
Mi Nandar, a rubber collector in Thailand’s Surat Thani Province, said, “There are a lot of Burmese migrant workers in Thailand who hold temporary passports, and the new Mae Sot to Moulmein airline will be a much more convenient way for the local people from Mon State to travel home. Every place in Thailand is just a one-night trip to Mae Sot, and if [this] happens, it will allow people to go back to Burma within a short time.”
The Don Maung – Mae Sot – Moulmein flight is also designed to attract tourists who want to take a quick trip to Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda and other popular places in Mon State.
U Aung Thu Nyein of the Vahu Development Institute said, “The economy of Mon State is stable. For this reason, many different economic opportunities can be created in Mon State. Every sector of the economy could be developed. The new airline will benefit both tourism and the economy.”
The flight from Mae Sot to Moulmein will last only 25 minutes on a 34-seat jet airplane and cost USD100, according to the meeting minutes from the Thai-Burma Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Thai-Burma Chamber of Commerce and Industry will negotiate with the Mon State Government on September 29 and 30 to officially establish the new Don Maung – Mae Sot – Moulmein airline and to get the CMQ permit to land international aircraft.
An official from Moulmein Airport said he was informed that the Thai-Burma Chamber of Commerce and Industry would fly to Moulmein on Friday, September 28 and land at Moulmein Airport.
