Burmese authorities have been extending the road near Lake Rih, in Falam Township, Chin State, on the Indo-Myanmar border. Work on the road began from the second week of October.
On the morning of September 28, a group of people came from Mizoram to Rih Lake in a sedan bus. The sedan bus overturned on Rih Road, three Mizo people died on the spot. It was then discovered that the extension of the road earlier had been faulty.
Due to the accident, SP C.Lalthanmawia from Champhai, on the Mizoram border and authorities of Chin State announced that they would jointly rebuild the road. They met at Indo-Myanmar border on October 1, where the decision to rebuild the road was taken.
"The authorities of Chin State have brought a bulldozer from Mizoram and are extending the road to about 30 feet in width,” said a local based near the border.
"They have borrowed a bigger bulldozer and are working on the road and it is likely to be completed by next month," he added.
The road is only 10 feet wide. Not only is the road bad, but it is also a high road, so many visitors face problems while travelling on this stretch.
For the last five years, the military government has been selling tracts near Rih to individuals. These people have made hotels, restaurants, a fun powered schooner and they have other constructions in the pipeline. So it has become an attractive place for tourists.
