Over 1,000 eligible voters in Palae constituency, in Sittkaing Region, are not included in the voter list for Sunday’s by-election, the NLD's office in Sittkaing Region said.
There are over 80,000 eligible voters in Palae constituency. However, over 1,000 are not included, Daw Khin San Hlaing, who is a candidate of the National League for Democracy (NLD), running for a seat in the People's Parliament (lower house), told Mizzima.
"The voter list is incorrect and different from the actual eligible voter list. Some voter names are not included as eligible voters. However, some dead-person’s names are included in the eligible voter list. For instance, if there are five eligible voters in a family authorities only mention three in the list. Some people, who are 18 years old, are missing. There are over 100 people missing from the eligible voter list in some villages," she explained.
According to Daw Khin San Hlaing, authorities are preparing the voter list by using the previous list used in the 2010 general elections. Authorities did not put young people, who are already 18 years-old, on the eligible voter list.
Incorrect eligible voter lists are seen in all five vacant constituencies in Sittkaing Region. A relative of a minister in the current government controls the eligible voter list in Palae constituency, according to our news source.
"U Htay Naing is going to contest the by-elections for the USDP party. A clerk of the USDP's office in Sittkaing is brother-in-law of Minister U Kyaw Hsan. He shows off his power. Therefore, we have a little bit of difficulty while campaigning in Sittkaing Region," Daw Khin San Hlaing continued.
"We quickly made a correct voter list and sent it to the UEC (Union Election Commission) on March 24. We are going to inquire about it," she said.
According to the NLD's statement issued on March 21st, incorrect voter lists have been found in Myaung-Mya constituency, in Ayawaddy Region, Taung-twin-gyi, in Magwe Region and Mayan-kon, in Yangon Region. According to U Nyan Win, chairman of the NLD party's Election Winning Committee, particular Township Election Commissions have not issued the correct eligible voter list yet and there are many people whose names are missing from the list.
