Moe Kyaw — Elderly voters in Sagaing Region’s Kalay Township faced difficulties voting after no special arrangements were been made for them on Election Day.
Daw Tin, an 85-year-old ethnic Chin woman, waited in line for over an hour to vote at Polling Station No 1 in Gyothonepin Ward in Kalay Township.
“She didn’t give an advance vote, but she wanted to cast her ballot so I brought her to the polling station. She had to stand over an hour under the hot sun. After coming out of the polling station, I told her to rest before taking her home by motorcycle,” said a friend of the woman.
A 79-year-old Chin man U Ngul Kam also waited a very long time to cast his vote.
An election officer of Tar Han Ward Polling Station told Khonumthung News they collected advanced votes by visiting peoples’ homes but weren’t able to collect all the votes after facing criticism from several of the larger parties. The election officer added that arrangements should have been made to allow the elderly and sick people to vote first at polling stations.
