The Arakan National Party (ANP) began their campaign in the Rangoon Region on Sunday with a high profile event aimed at garnering votes in the former capital.

“We are informing the Arakan people living in the Rangoon Region about the candidates who will represent the ANP.  We will continue to hold rallies during the coming days. Today is only for public awareness,” Arakan Affairs Minister U Zaw Aye Maung told Narinjara.

Ma Khin Than Htay, a garment factory worker in Hlaingtharyar, said she welcomed a chance to vote for the ANP.  “I’m allowed to vote because I’ve been living here for a long time.  I will only vote for the Arakan party.  I warmly welcome our Arakan to campaign here.”

Nine candidates from the ANP will compete for seats in the Rangoon Region Constituencies No 1 and 2, in both the Lower House and the Upper House.  The position of Arakan Affairs Minister will also be contested by an ANP candidate.

"We started our campaign in Hlaingtharyar and Shwe Pyi Tar where many of the candidates are running.  We will continue to campaign during the coming days,” said the party’s campaign leader for the Rangoon Region, U Ba Swe.

Arakan Affairs Minister U Zaw Aye Maung from the ANP, Daw Khin Saw Wai from the National League for Democracy (NLD), and U Maung Maung Kyaw from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) will all run as candidates in the the election in the Rangoon Region.

A total of 78 candidates will represent the ANP in Arakan State, Chin State’s Palatwa, the Rangoon Region and the Irrawaddy Region.
