The Mon National Party (MNP) will hold its second party conference in April next year, according to a November 7 announcement.

The party, which has members in 18 townships, will begin holding village-level meetings next January and February and township-level summits in March in the lead-up to the central conference.

“This conference is not an emergency conference. It’s a regular conference held by the party, but it will be too close to the election if it is held five years [after the first conference]. So, we are holding it one year earlier,” said MNP General Secretary Nai Layih Tamarh.

The general secretary said that conference agenda would focus on boosting party unity and sustainability, as well as reviewing party policy and current issues affecting Mon communities.

“We plan to re-elect the party leadership,” he added.

He did not share details about the township and venue that would host the conference, but said that the party would reelect party leadership positions at the conference.

The MNP held its first conference at its headquarters in Mawlamyine, Mon State on December 22, 2014. New Mon State Party (NMSP) chair Nai Htaw Mon attended the conference and delivered a speech.

The MNP contested 53 candidates in the 2015 general election for seats in Kayin (Karen), Mon, and Tanintharyi States. It won one seat in the Amyotha Hluttaw and two seats in the Mon State Hluttaw in 2015
