Mon Anti- Dictatorship Party Bans Festivities in Kyainseikgyi

The New Mon State Party-Anti-Dictatorship (NMSP-AD) imposed a ban on festivities in Kyainseikgyi Township, Karen State. Nai Kaung Sakar, the information officer of NMSP-AD, stated that the prohibition of such festivities aims to mitigate the risk of potential enemy attacks.

"We are banning festivities to stop potential enemy attacks. Our troops are active near Kyainseikgyi, so if they see crowds they might attack, as seen in other areas. To avoid such circumstances, we decided to prevent the large gatherings”, he explained.

NMSP-AD emphasized that the ban is solely for public safety and not intended to infringe upon human rights.

NMSP-AD has declared a prohibition on theatrical performances, musicals, and various entertainment activities starting from March 10th, while permitting events like religious ceremonies, weddings, baby naming ceremonies, and traditional rituals to take place strictly between 6:00 am - 8:00 pm with a ban on loud sound systems after 8:00 PM.

"The situation has changed, and we have already declared our intention to fight the Junta, meaning clashes could arise anytime. Therefore, it is important to prepare defensive measures in advance in every possible aspect”, Nai Kaung Sakar added.

Opinions on NMSP-AD's announcement vary, with some supporting it and others expressing dissatisfaction. ”A  Kyainseikgyi resident told IMNA, When NMSP-AD announced the ban during ongoing festivities, it felt like it was taking away the young people's right to have fun, so it is no surprise some are not happy about it. But I believe only a few people might feel this way. In times like these, it is important to stay alert and aware. Personally I think banning festivities is a smart move given the situation. For instance, loudspeakers at night could mask the sound of explosions.”

On February 14, NMSP-AD, the splinter group from the main NMSP, declared its intention to join resistance forces, including ethnic armed organizations (EAOs), in the fight for establishing a federal union. Following the announcement, NMSP-AD members increased their activity not only in Mon State but also in Mon villages located in Kyainseikgyi located in Karen State.

Analysts noted that fierce clashes could erupt at any time in villages where NMSP-AD is active. NMSP-AD also reported an increase in the number of young people joining it following the announcement to combat the Junta.
