The National Unity Government (NUG) accuses the  Military Council of denying medical aid to 19 individuals, including 11 children, injured due to a Junta-launched airstrike in Kanan village in Tamu Township, Sagaing Region.

Daw Yati Ohh, the nurse in charge of Mobile Medical Team - West Division, said during NUG's press conference on January 12th, "The Military Council obstructed the injured villagers from entering Tamu town, going to the extent of conducting surprise inspections

on private hospitals and clinics. Although in theory, residents from Kanan village are not allowed to enter Tamu, we are actively assisting the injured and facilitating medical treatment, details of which cannot be disclosed due to security reasons”, Eyewitnesses reported that the aircraft of the Military Council conducted attacks on Kanan village situated along the Kale-Tamu Road in the Khampat area of Tamu Township on January 7th. The air raid coincided with students attending the village's high school branch and worshipers gathering at St. Peter Church, as the Military Council utilized an A5 fighter jet to bomb the area twice, releasing two bombs on each occasion.

In the aftermath of the airstrike, witnesses report that 17 civilians, including 9 children aged between 5 and 17, lost their lives with some bodies severely mutilated.

Of the 19 individuals injured, 11 were children aged between 3 and 16. Currently Junta forces are firmly obstructing all efforts to provide medical treatment to the wounded.

The Kanan village bombing incident resulted in a single family bearing numerous casualties, including both injuries and fatalities.

Medical teams from NUG and local defense forces (LDF) are providing treatment to some of the injured in a liberated area. However, Ma Khaing Lay, a field officer of NUG's Ministry of Women, Youth, and Children Affairs, expressed concerns that the possibility of another airstrike looms, if information about such humanitarian efforts is leaked.

The Military Council bombed Kanan village, despite the absence of any ongoing conflict, resulting in the destruction of two schools, a church, and ten houses, locals said.

During the press conference, U Kyaw Zaw, the spokesperson of the NUG's presidential office, highlighted that within the first week of 2024, 57 civilians, including 18 children were killed by the actions of the Military Council.

Between the coup and December 2023, the Military Council conducted over 580 aerial bombardments on civilian targets, killing 897 civilians.

The NUG has also declared its commitment to ensuring that perpetrators, as well as those who ordered and instructed such actions deemed war crimes, along with their accomplices who encouraged and assisted them, will be prosecuted and appropriately punished in the future.
