Authorities collect names for referendum
Local Burmese military junta authorities are collecting the names of those who are over 18 years of age for the constitutional referendum in Tachilek Township, on the Thai-Burma border, according to sources.

On 1 March, the local authorities ordered residents registered in Tachilek to report to the local office in their quarters. Residents of Tachilek who are working in Thailand and fail to report to the local office will lose their right to vote in the referendum, the sources said.
Non-permanent residents of Tachilek also have to report. The local authorities will then issue a temporary house register for them so they can have the right to vote.
Currently, the militia, policemen and army personnel are patrolling in shifts providing security in every quarter every night.
In Burma, local authorities in every state are urging people to renew ID cards to support the new constitutional referendum to be held in May 2008 and the general election to be held in 2010.
