An investigation into 10 townships where the National League for Democracy said the complaints occurred turned up a “groundless complaint," the article said.

“In the light of findings, the investigation teams and some parties suggest that there was no case of waxing the ballots and no legal complaint about it in those 10 townships; it was groundless complaint,” said the EC.

“Such false accusations could harm the image of Myanmar’s by-election closely watched by the world, and legal action should be lodged against the false grumbler,” said the article.

Acting on reports by the NLD, the UEC said it assigned investigation teams comprised of chairmen and secretaries of region/state, district and township EC sub-commissions and two political parties to look into the cases where the complaints arose and enabled them to inspect ballots cast in poll stations.

The complaint made by the secretary of the NLD central campaign team is invalid, the article said, and it warned the party against stating “such groundless information, leading to misunderstanding among the people.”

During the April 1 election, complaints of “waxed” ballots surfaced almost simultaneously with the opening of polls in a number of constituencies.

A complaint letter was sent to the Union Election Commission by the National League for Democracy (NLD) party objecting to some polling stations refusing to exchange tampered ballots. It alleged the ballots were tampered with wax, which prevented voters from recording their ballots properly. The NLD said polling station officials refused to exchange the faulty ballots.

The complaint letter said incidents of ballot tampering occurred in Nyaungbinthar, Sinshin, Tanei, Ahlepone and Chaungna villages in Pale Township, Sagaing Region, and other constituencies including Mawlamyine, Myanaung, Magwe, Kawhmu, Mingalataungnyunt, Mayangon, Dagon Seikkan, Taungdwingyi and Kalaw (Aungban).
