NUG claims Myanmar junta burned down 41,000 houses in 2022

The Fire Service Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration of the National Unity Government (NUG) released a statement on 1 January stating that over 41,000 houses were torched and destroyed by the Military Council during the last year, 2022.

In the statement, Military Council soldiers committed 1,058 crimes throughout the country last year.

The Fire Service Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration of NUG has verified and published the facts and figures submitted by the media, civil society organizations, the public and NGOs.

According to the statement, the Military Council committed the most arson cases in Sagaing Region between 1 January and 31 December 2022.

In the statement, the number of houses destroyed in 2022 were as follows: 31,400 in Sagaing region, 8,500 in Magway region, 480 in Mandalay, 65 in Bago region, 43 in Rakhine State, 25 in Mon State, 85 in Tanintharyi Region, 250 in Chin and Kachin States, 120 in Karen and Karenni States, and 60 in Shan State.

According to the NUG, the published list is based on reports, and the actual number of houses destroyed on the ground may be higher.

The Military Council reportedly burned down houses in 12 out of the 15 states and regions including Naypyitaw.

The Military Council continues to set fires in Sagaing, which is in the upper region of Myanmar, where local defense forces are fiercely fighting against the regime.
