The Zomi National Congress (ZNC), which won seats in the 1990 general election in Burma from Chin state, is keen on being recognized as a political party by the Election Commission. Its registration was cancelled in 1992.

The party wants changes in the 2008 military engineered constitution and wants to promote development in Chin State.

“Development of Chin state, road construction and education will be highlighted by the party. If the party is to participate in Burma’s Hluttaw, the country’s constitution will have to be changed,” said PuCin Sian Thang, the party leader.

A decision was made by party members in the last week of February to apply for registration as a political party, to be submitted to the Election Commissioner.

The party also decided to register so that it can get permission to contest the next election along with the National League for Democracy Party, led by Daw Aung San Su Kyi.

“We will fight continuously against the 2008 constitution, legally and under the law of the present government,” said PuCin Sian Thang.

The ZNC won the 1990 general elections in Burma from Teddim and Ton Zang Township No. 2 constituency but the party’s registration was cancelled on the basis of Declaration 7/92, by the State Peace and Development Council in March 1992.

Therefore, the party demonstrated during the 2010 Burmese general election.

The ZNC is a member of the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA) which comprises the Mon National Democratic Front (MNDF), Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), totaling 11 parties.

Now, the UNA, MNDF and ALD have submitted applications for recognition to the Election Commission of Burma. The decision was made by the SNLD, led by U KhunHtunOo, to submit an application.

The 1990 election was won by the ZNC, Chin National League for Democracy and Mara People’s Party from Chin state.
